Wisdom Teeth Surgery

Make A Wise Decision

Wisdom teeth are usually best removed soon after they are seen to be growing inappropriately. If not, they can increase the risk of gum infection as well as crowding and misalignment of teeth possibly leading to other unnecessary dental procedures and expenses which can be easily avoided.

In an ideal (but rare) situation, wisdom teeth can come through the gums and are well aligned with the other teeth. Unfortunately, majority of us don’t have enough room on our jaws for wisdom teeth to grow appropriately. This creates easy traps for food, causing bacteria to grow, leading to significant swelling and pain. The absolute worst case scenario would be your wisdom teeth growing and attacking you without any pain. This is when bacteria slowly causes decay not only on the wisdom teeth but the teeth surrounding it. Because this is a deadly and silent process, by the time this is detected, often both teeth will need to be extracted.

BUT! There is a way to prevent this nightmare from happening! Wisdom teeth usually start growing at around the age of 17, so around this age, it is important to get x-rays so that the dentist can easily detect issues. Unfortunately, x-rays do inquire a small cost but it is totally worth it if a wisdom teeth issue is detected and treated early on without any other easily avoided and unnecessary procedures such as extracting multiple teeth.

If you do go ahead with removing your wisdom teeth, Roseville Dental Practice has two options for you. You can do it in the dental chair with us where we you will receive local anaesthesia to numb the jaw and gum. Or we can refer you to the hospital where you will be under general anaesthesia (not awake) throughout the whole process.
